It was one of those lazy days and Everett was laying in the backyard soaking up the sun. He could hear giggles coming from his friend Joey as he romped and played with his friend Ginger. Ginger was a big brown and white dog, and Ginger and Joey were best buddies.
Everett was thinking what a wonderful thing it was to have friends when he heard Joey’s mother call that it was time to leave. Joey was looking forward to going with his mom to the mall today and with a quick goodbye he flew out the backyard gate.
Everett decided it was time for a nice glass of lemonade and started into the house. Then he saw the back gate was open, Joey in his rush to join his mom, had forgotten to shut the gate. Quickly he looked for Ginger, and there she lay in the warm grass sunning his self.
Everett knew it was just a matter of time before Ginger would go exploring the backyard and find the gate open. Everett was too small to close the gate, and no one was around to help! Sure enough Ginger saw a gold and black butterfly, and begin to chase it around the yard, before you knew it Ginger was out the gate following the butterfly.
Everett was so worried about Ginger, but all he could do was wait for his friend Joey and his Mom to return. Everett was hoping they wouldn’t be gone very long.
When Joey and his Mom arrived the first thing Joey did was head to the back yard and call out to Ginger. When he saw the gate open he knew Ginger had to be gone. With tears starting to form in his eyes he ran to his Mom. Mom, Mom Ginger is gone! He knew he had to tell his Mom that the gate had been left open because he had forgotten to shut it. Joey was so worried his Mom would be upset with him.
Joey’s Mom reached down and wrapped Joey in her arms and told him she wasn’t upset with him. They could talk later about responsibilities, but now they needed to find Ginger. Off they went in the car to find Joey’s best friend.
Everett had already climbed in the car, and was sitting on the armrest. He just had to go with Joey to help find his friend. Everett saw Ginger first and then Joey let out a yell, Mom there is Ginger! She was playing with a little girl as they both chased a butterfly across her yard.
"Best Friend"
Stephanie told Joey she came out to play and Ginger was chasing a butterfly. She knew Ginger had to be lost so decided to play with her until someone came to find Ginger. Both Joey and his Mom told Stephanie how grateful they were and invited her to come and play with Ginger and Joey whenever she would like to.
On the way home Joey was very quite and Everett knew something was on Joey’s mind. After Ginger was returned to her backyard Joey asked if he could talk to his Mom.
Joey told his Mom that he knew it had been his responsibility to shut the gate, and because he didn’t Ginger had almost become lost forever. He promised his Mom he would be more careful in the future and promised always to take care of his best friend.
Joey’s Mom sat down in the grass next to him and told him she knew it had been an accident, but part of growing up was being responsible, and he had forgotten to do that. Joey was so sad he almost begins to cry, but then his Mom said she was also proud of him. Now how could that be wondered Everett.
She told Joey that he had shown great responsibility by admitting he had forgotten to shut the gate. He then worked hard to find his friend and bring her home. She believed Joey when he gave his promise to take care of his friend and knew he would do a great job! Both Everett and Joey were now smiling as Joey’s Mom gave him a hug and a kiss on the top of his head.
Off Joey went to play with his best friend Ginger and this time he made sure the gate was shut! Laughter was coming from the back yard again as Joey and Ginger ran through the yard chasing each other. Everett and Joey learned today that having fun was great, but part of growing up was being responsible and caring about those who loved and depended on you.
