The Waves Go Marching On
By, © David Mathes

There is something magical that happens to a select few, fortunate, people in this world, and thankfully, I am one of them. When a young boy is taken to the beach and shown the splendors of surfing, his life is forever changed.

One of the first things that he finds is the friendship and respect that he can achieve by showing those same virtues.

The camaraderie comes almost natural to those who are willing to find and work at friendship, while the respect of others comes as ability and character both mature. Another change he feels is internal, one that is almost spiritual.

He finds himself respecting the ocean and those, like the dolphins that ride the waves, that live within its loving grasp. Later, just a few short years down the beach, he too finds that his heart pumps saltwater through his viens.

He cannot feel alive without going to the beach and enjoying some of Mother Oceans finer moments. He reaches a stage in his life where his ego, friends, annd contest are no longer the reasons for going there.

He goes there now not to prove himself, but to be alone. To become one with his thoughts, his dreams....to put his reality in a perspective that he can understand.

He talks to the seagulls, the fish, and even the sea lions for their advice on what he should do about the fight he had earlier with his girlfriend. After a few more sunsets, he realizes that the reality that the rest of the world lives in may not permit him to always be close to the beach. He discovers that this too has already been worked out for him, as the ocean has left him with many memories and warm feelings to tide him over untill he can make it back.

When things start to get too tough, all he has to do is close his eyes and he's back. Suddenly he can smell the salt air, feel the water move beneath his feet, and see the pelicans skim across the water.

He is home again and everything is okay, because he knows that the waves will go marching on...
