Just Like You
Everett was having so much fun at school; each day was so exciting to him. Today was a special day, his teacher had told the class a new student would be arriving.

The door to his class opened and there with the principle was the new student. Everyone in the class became very quite and some giggled nervously. Everett really didn’t know what to do he hadn‘t ever meet anyone like her before. Principle Johnson introduced the new student and her name was Lisa. She looked like any other kid in class except for one thing; she was in a wheel chair!

Lisa looked so nervous and shy. Everett raised up from his desk, and asked Ms. Smith if he could show Lisa to her seat. Ms. Smith said that was a wonderful idea and pointed to where Lisa would be sitting.

Recess came and the children all went running outside. Everett noticed that Lisa was sitting in her wheel chair watching all the children playing jump rope. Everett thought to himself how Lisa could never play jump rope, so what could he do to help her be part of the games the kids were all playing.

Everett inched closer and closer to Lisa, with a small voice and smile, he found the courage and said hi. He was surprised when she smiled, and said hi back to him. Lisa it turned out was nice and easy to talk to, just like the other kids. He still wasn’t sure about asking her all about the wheel chair, and how could she play with the other kids.

Then Lisa said something that really surprised him, she asked if she could play jump rope! Now how in the world did she think she could play jump rope! Lisa explained that she just needed a helping hand across the play ground to the jump area and then she could show him.

Everett helped her roll across the playground yard and when they reached the other children she asked if she could join in. Lisa reached down took the end of the rope and started spinning it, everyone cheered and Lisa smiled the most beautiful smile.

Later she told Everett that she had a wonderful first day at school all because of him. He had given her a helping hand that day and that in turn had made her feel comfortable enough to make new friends.

Everett learned something really neat at school that day! No matter how different others may look, they are just like you. Sometimes all they need is a helping hand, a smile, and your friendship.
