As the bell rang at the end of school, Mary walked slowly out the door. She felt all nervous inside, with butterflies bouncing all around her tummy.
There was her Mom waiting to pick her up, Mary walked even slower to the car. Hi Mary her mother called out as she opened the car door. Mary slid in and wished she could disappear into the car seat.
How was your day at school? Now there was the question Mary had dreaded all day! Fine Mom, oh why had she done that, her day hadn’t been fine? In fact Mary had forgotten where she was and talked while in the school library, Ms. Johnson her teacher had given her a green card for talking. The library was a place for everyone to be quite and she had talked to her friend Lisa.
Now what was she going to do? She didn’t mean to lie to her Mom, it had just slipped out. The car pulled into the driveway and Mary rushed into the house, she didn’t want her Mom to ask her any more questions. Everett had been waiting most of the day for Mary to come home. He couldn’t wait for them to play tea party. As the door opened Mary threw herself on the bed and Everett knew something was very wrong with his little friend.
Mary heard the knock on her door and crossed her fingers that her Mom wouldn’t open the door. She heard the door open and kept her eyes tightly closed, Mary’s mother set on the bed next to Mary and asked her if anything was wrong?
"Don't Remember"
I don’t remember, it’s nothing. Mary thought that was a safe answer. Everett knew that wasn’t true just from how Mary was acting.
Mary did something happen at school today, you seem so upset? Her Mother seemed to be worried and that made Mary even sadder, oh dear what was she going to do? Mary really didn’t want her Mother to be disappointed in her and just knew she would be.
Mary you know no matter what is wrong Mom is always here and loves you. Mary sat up with huge tears rolling down her face. Mom I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth. I didn’t have a good day and I talked in the library at school today.
Mary’s mother took her by the hand and went to the big over stuffed chair they sat in when it was cuddle time. Everett moved next to the table as he was so worried about Mary and wanted to be sure she was ok. Mary I am disappointed that you talked in the library and that you didn’t tell me about it. But I want you to know that no matter what happens; I will always love you. Not telling the truth only makes you feel worse, and I know you always want me to believe and trust you.
Everett knew that Mary had learned a good lesson today and he learned something to. By not telling the truth it only made things worse and left you feeling all queasy inside. Knowing you are loved and trusted is better than ice cream on a hot summer day. He knew Mary would never forget again.
