© Everett the Mouse, The Visitor
The night was clear and for some reason Everett noticed that the stars seems very bright tonight. He had found a warm cozy corner in the stable and was a very content little mouse. The straw made a wonderful bed, and he had made his corner neat and tidy.
The animals that shared this small stable seemed restless, it was as if something was going to happen, but no one knew what. A light was moving towards the stable out of the darkness, and Everett wondered what could be going on this late at night.
He saw a man leading a tired gray donkey and the pretty lady sitting astride the donkey were heading towards the stable. At first Everett scampered off and hid in his little corner, but his curiosity over came his fear. The lady looked so kind and the man seemed worried about the lady.
"The Gift"
Something strange seemed to be happening in the stable, and he could hear the lamb whispering to the doves. Excitement was filling the air, but no one understood why. Then the lady spoke in a soft voice to the man and said "it was time". Time for what Everett wondered as he moved from his corner to peek from under the manger.
He noticed the stable was filling with animals big and small, and they moved quietly finding a spot to rest. The doves cooed a soft song that filled the stable. All of a sudden Everett noticed a star began to shine just a little brighter than the rest, and the glow seemed to fill the sky night. He watched the star, and forgot for a moment about the lady and the man who shared his little home.
With a start he heard a small cry, it didn’t last long but took his full attention. There in the lady's arm was a small white bundle that seemed to have a soft glow around it. It was a baby, wrapped in swaddling cloth. Everett knew something was very special about this baby. He knew the baby would need a place to sleep, but where could this baby lay his little head?
Then Everett remembered the little manger.
Quickly he went to work, moving the straw, setting it just right. It had to be a soft, gentle place to lay this small and very special child. He wasn’t sure if the lady would like his small gift to the baby, but he hoped she would. Once he had everything just right he moved closer to the lady and the child. From his spot he could see the man and lady talking to this little bundle in her arms.
Then the lady looked right at him! A smile crossed her lovely face and she spoke to the man. He walked over to the manger and moved the little wooden manger next to the lady. The child was placed in the manger, and Everett knew it was filled just right for this child. The lady looked right at Everett and said, "Thank you for your gift".
Then Everett heard the most beautiful music in the world; it came from above the stable. Angels were singing and filling the night sky. The star was now shinning brightly, like a beacon in the night sky. Everett had made the first gift to this small child, but he knew somehow in his heart a larger gift had just been given to the world.
